Playground to Podium (P2P) is a framework of key interventions aiming to identify and develop the ability of disabled people in sport.

Research has found that not enough athletes are progressing from local or county based competitions to engage with performance environments, clubs and squads. Following national consultation with a wide range of partners and a reviewing of existing programmes and initiatives, a framework has been developed to enhance existing player pathways and providing increased opportunities in sport for disabled participants.

The Playground to Podium (P2P) Framework is driven by the; Youth Sport Trust, Sport England, English Federation of Disability Sports Organisations & Paralympics GB. The process commences with local ability days in schools feeding into a County Athlete Assessment Day run by the County Sport Partnership.

There are 6 sports involved in the programme these are:

These are all Paralympic sports that have been identified through consultation with National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB's) relating to their ability to deliver against the P2P framework.

The framework incorporates a series of key interventions commencing with School Sport Partnership staff training ahead of Local Identifying Ability Days. The Ability Days are coordinated by each School Sport Partnership (SSP) inviting local disabled children to demonstrate their skills following generic skills testing cards provided by the Youth Sport Trust.

These cards assist with continuity whilst School Sports Coordinators (SSCo's) and P.E teachers collate the results before entering into the Parasport website system. Through this computer system the top 10 children in each School Sport Partnership are invited to the County Athlete Assessment Day (CAAD) which is managed by South Yorkshire Sport. Here, the National Governing Bodies of sport assess each of the top 100 children against sport specific activities. This is then the catalyst for those with talent to progress through the relevant National Governing Body pathways, hopefully from Local to County onto Regional and potentially National level participation (see diagram below).

Throughout the entire process the young people are signposted to local participation opportunities both in school; taking the shape of multi-sport clubs, and within the community. To ensure a range of provisions are available for the young people local development officers work in partnership to support clubs to become more inclusive and better equip.
