Goalball in the spotlight on UK Television
Channel 4 are
aiming to follow up this initial series in 2011 and in 2012 to help
build anticipation as we approach August 2012 Paralympics.
The
aim in this first series is to introduce the viewing audience to the
exciting world that is Paralympic sport and to some of the British
athletes in the context of the build-up to 2012. The shows follow a
magazine format with 4-5 items in 30 minutes linked together by their
presenters Rick Edwards and Ade Adepitan (Presenter and Paralympic
athlete).
The programme features Goalball with the
Goalball challenge. Ade Adepitan and Iwan Thomas go head to head in a
sporting quest, designed to demystify Goalball in the run up to 2012.
Ade
and Iwan have 3 months to each find a team and get them skilled in the
sport of Goalball. As our presenters coach their teams, the programme
will highlight the complexity and skills involved, whilst exploring the
sport from a grassroots perspective.
Goalball also gained
exposure over the weekend as the World Goalball Championships were
featured as part of `Sportnation` on SKY Sports.

Tall Ship Visit to Whitby & Hull 2011
Lord Nelson will be visiting Hull and Whitby in August &
September 2011 and we are looking for people from surrounding areas to join
these voyages.We will be visiting
Whitby in time to take part in the Annual Maritime Festival before departing on
the next journey to Hull.We always try
to incorporate a visit to a foreign port or two during a voyage so have your
passport at the ready for this life-changing experience.
The aim of the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) is to use tall
ship sailing to promote the integration and collaboration of able-bodied and
disabled people; proving that the pursuit of common goals overrides diversity.
Men and women from age sixteen upwards become integral parts of a tall ship
crew for either a day or a voyage; challenging themselves in a new, exciting
environment and having the time of their lives.
Each member of a tall ship crew is involved in all parts of
life on board ship. Whether disabled or able-bodied, experienced sailors or
first timers, everyone participates in activities such as helming, unfurling
the sails and cleaning the ship.
Both of JST’s tall ships – LORD NELSON and TENACIOUS – have
been purpose built to accommodate people of all physical abilities being
actively involved in all aspects of crewing the ship. Features include:
Wide
aisles both above and below deck for wheelchair users
Lifts
between decks to allow wheelchair users or people with limited mobility to
move around independently
Large
display and talking compasses to facilitate visually impaired or blind
people to navigate
Signs
in Braille
Vibrating
pads fitted to bunks to alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing to
emergencies
Guidance
tracks on decks for the blind and visually impaired
Power
assisted or joystick steering, allowing those with limited strength or
mobility to helm the ship.
During the summer months, LORD NELSON and TENACIOUS travel
around Britain, Ireland and the Channel Islands, exploring many cities along
the way. Since LORD NELSON hasn’t visited
Hull in over 15 years and after a planned stop at Whitby in 2007 had to be
cancelled as a result of bad weather conditions, the ship’s visit to Yorkshire
is much anticipated. Visiting new places is always exciting for crew members, especially
those like Yorkshire with a lively sailing community and plenty to do ashore.
Voyages with JST are a challenging, rewarding adventure that
can change lives and give new perspectives on diversity within age and physical
ability. They are also a useful addition to a CV, especially with programmes
such as Youth Leadership @ Sea for 16 – 25 year olds, which allows young people
to experience working with and leading a team on board.
If you need assistance with finances then start planning now
and our fundraising team will be able to help you with fundraising ideas and
contact information for funding organisations.
