Leadership & Volunteering

Leadership and Volunteering is a key part of the Government’s 5 Hour Offer for young people. It contributes in two ways:

  • It provides a workforce of young leaders and volunteers who can create opportunities for other young people to take part in sport
  • If the role is fundamentally active – for example refereeing or some forms of coaching – then it can count towards the five hours itself.

Leadership & Volunteering Opportunities for Young People in Sport

Step into Sport

Step into Sport is a key element of Leadership and Volunteering, part of the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People ( PESSYP ). It gives 11-19 year olds a range of co-ordinated local opportunities, helping them become leaders and volunteers in sport.

Its objective is to develop leadership through sport and leadership in sport. It aims to drive:

  • Personal change in young people by supporting the development of inter-personal skills, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility
  • Structural change through our work with key agencies to offer broader opportunities for young people to make a valued contribution to the delivery of sport.

The programme is managed by Sport England and Youth Sport Trust, with the support of Sports Leaders UK.

Volunteering

How will Step into Sport help South Yorkshire?
Step into Sport will help to establish communication and sustainable links between school sport partnerships and local clubs through providing opportunities to volunteer in community placements.

South Yorkshire Sport will provide assistance in brokering high quality volunteering opportunities in community settings. This will be achieved by matching the skills and interests of volunteers to vacancies in a community club/organisation that have achieved the minimum operating standards.

Through Step into Sport, South Yorkshire Sport aims to identify a Volunteer Mentor in each club/organisation, to ensure the young volunteer has a point of support in each placement.

South Yorkshire Sport requires clubs willing to support young volunteers in providing high quality community placements to contact Simon Pugh Partnership Development Officer, on 0114 2235677, who will ensure the club can provide a quality experience to the young volunteers.
