The Community Sports Coach Scheme began in South Yorkshire
in 2003. South Yorkshire was a pilot area for the phase 1 community coaches,
and initially secured money from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
for six full time coaches to be employed for the following three years.
The
scheme as a whole aimed to establish 3000 paid full and part time coaches
throughout the country by the end of 2006, in three phases. South Yorkshire
Sport has since been successful in applying for phase 2 and phase 3 community
coaches through the Regional Sports Board, and now has a total of 42 part and
full time coaches in action around the county.
The scheme was established
following the results of the Coaching Task Force Final Report (July 2002),
which identified a number of issues relating to the employment of coaches in
England, including limited opportunities for coaches to develop coaching as a
career, few active professional coaches and a lack of professional development
of coaches.
The Community Sports Coach
Scheme aims to:
-Create a step change in developing a career
structure for coaching;
-Provide an increase in the number of qualified
coaches emp
loyed at a local level;
-Provide quality standards for the
recruitment, employment, management and development of coaches;
-Provide managed, quality continuous
professional development support for employed coaches; and
-Provide high-quality coaching with a focus on
young people. Details of our current Community Coach work force, including
their hosting agencies,
