There are many ways to get involved in sport within the South Yorkshire area. Whether it be in a coaching role, an officiating role, support with statistical match analysis, website design, club or event organisation these pages will highlight the different opportunities available to you.
Alternatively, you maybe a club or organisation looking for additional support through volunteers, who will be able to help out with your junior section, with coaching, at events or with administration.
Currently, South Yorkshire Sport is supporting the Youth Sport Trust`s Step into Sport National Volunteering Programme. For more information on Step into Sport, click here.
Why Volunteer? Volunteering is an ideal way to get involved in sports that you`re really interested in, whether it`s coaching, umpiring, administration or just going along to help or to have fun.
There are many reasons to get involved with a sports club or organisation as a volunteer. These include:
You will meet new people that are interested in the same sport/s or activities as you.
You will gain experience, confidence and new skills that employer`s value, such as working as part of a team, problem solving and developing initiative.
You will gain experience of leadership through taking activities you enjoy.
You can experience the organisation behind local and international events.
You can develop useful contacts in your chosen sport/activity, which may lead to possible employment opportunities.
You may find it makes your college, university and/or job application stronger when having a volunteer role on your CV.
Who can volunteer? Anyone, who has an interest in sport and wants to make a difference to their local sporting community.
How much time do you really have to give? This is up to you! Some clubs and community groups would like support for an hour or two a week, others may require help for a whole day for a specific event that they are running. We aim to find you a volunteering opportunity that will fit in with your existing time commitments. Please click HERE for clubs and organisations that provide placements, as well as a list of volunteering opportunities across South Yorkshire.

What do volunteer centres do? Volunteer Centres (VCs) are the local agencies that promote and develop volunteering. They provide support at a local level for individual volunteers and volunteer involving organisations. They have six core functions:
Brokerage: VDAs primary function is to match both individuals and groups interested in volunteering with appropriate opportunities in the local community. VDAs hold information on a comprehensive range of opportunities. They offer potential volunteers support and advice matching their motivation to volunteer with appropriate volunteering opportunities.
Marketing volunteering: VDAs stimulate and encourage local interest in volunteering and community activity. This may include promoting and marketing volunteering through local, regional and national events and campaigns .VDAs will manage and promote a national brand for volunteering.
Good practice development: VDAs promote good practice in working with volunteers to all volunteer involving organisations. They deliver training and accreditation for potential volunteers, volunteers, volunteer managers and the volunteering infrastructure.
Develop volunteering opportunities: VDAs work in close partnership with statutory, voluntary and private sector agencies as well as community groups and faith groups to develop local volunteering opportunities. VDAs understand the potential offered by the local communities and work with them to realise this potential. VDA will target specific groups which face barriers to volunteering. VDA work creatively to develop imaginative, non-formal opportunities for potential volunteers.
Policy response and campaigning: VDAs identify proposals or legislation that may impact on volunteering. It will lead and/or participate in campaigns on issues that affect volunteers or volunteering. VDAs campaign proactively for a more volunteer-literate and volunteer-friendly climate.
Strategic development of volunteering: As the local experts on volunteering VDAs inform strategic thinking and planning at a regional and national level
Voluntary Action…. are independent charity organizations who play a vital role in relation to community and volunteer organizations. They offer appropriate support and services on a local level, providing technical advice and training.
Information for Clubs Like many amateur sports clubs in the UK, they are ran by volunteers, who are rushed off their feet doing 3 different roles to keep the club running smoothly!
If that sounds familiar and you feel your club could benefit from having some additional support, whether it be in the area of coaching, administration or help with the running of an one-off event. Then we could help; we have enthusiastic volunteers interested in finding placements who have a wide variety of skills.
If your club or organisation would like to offer an opportunity to young volunteers and can meet the criteria set below, then please complete and return the placement registration form to Simon Pugh at South Yorkshire Sport
