The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES) boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK, if not Europe. It has a wide range of clients from the public and private sector, and operates across two main disciplines:
- Exercise and Health Sciences
- Performance Enhancement
CSES began operations in autumn 2000 as the result of a £5 million investment by Sheffield Hallam University. Our vision and continuing aim is to be 'world class' in research, consultancy, training, and education.
Our services have previously benefited various individuals and teams from the world of sport such as Men's and Ladies European Tour golfers, Rugby Football Union, Royal Yachting Association, All England Netball Association and UK Athletics.
Some of our current clients include downhill mountain bike World Champion Steve Peat (2X World Cup Champ, 7X British Champ, 2X European Champ, 17 World Cup wins), professional boxer, Dave Howe; Premiership referees, Howard Webb and Martin Atkinson; Go Kart Racer, Russ Danzey; Rotherham Titans RUFC; Sheffield Volleyball Club; Rotherham United F.C, Sheffield United F.C and British Champion Halfpipe skier, James Machon. In addition, Sheffield Hallam hosts National Performance Centres for both GB Fencing and GB Hockey providing services to national and Olympic potential athletes.

The Sport Industry Research Centre is a legacy of the 1991 World Student Games. Without that event neither of Sheffield’s two universities would have invested in sport-related teaching and research. Today the Centre has a full time staff of 17 and a turnover in excess of £1m. In 2008 we were ranked fourth best university in the UK for the quality of our research in sport. The success of our team is down to a young and motivated team of staff who buy in to what we are trying to achieve. As in sport, good teams pull together for each other, put themselves on the line for each other, and trust each other. As we see ourselves as being young and up and coming, we are particularly pleased to sponsor the Young Team of the Year award
